Ruth MacKenzie’s Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden
10th Anniversary Concert

(USA)
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the project, Ruth and friends present a concert performance of her song cycle that tells the Salmon Maiden's story from the Finnish national epic Kalevala.
 
Kalevala was a complete sellout for its first two theatrical runs in the Twin Cities in the late 1990s—so book your tickets now!

Saturday, September 29th — 2pm

(Sweden)
This new Swedish trio (sax, fiddle, percussion) have a bright openness to new sounds alongside a deep understanding of Swedish tradition. Their goal is to explore the depths of Nordic music to find out how three people can sound like one.

Sinikka Langeland Trio

(Norway)
From “Finnskogen” (the “Finnish forest” near Oslo), Sinikka sings and plays the 39-string concert kantele, with its five-octave range. Her current project presents the poetry of Hans Børli with an outstanding ensemble that opens up the songs to improvisation.

JPP

(Finland)
With family roots going back to the 19th century, JPP’s music features their trademark “wall of fiddles,” creative arrangements, and a playful approach to seriously great music.

Sunday, September 30th — 2pm
Lännen-Jukka String Band

(Finland)
A unique fusion of mountain folk songs from the southern United States, Mississippi blues and old Finnish sleigh songs, led by J. Karjalainen, one of the top-selling names in Finnish popular music.

Den Fule

(Sweden)
Veterans of the Swedish roots music scene (Groupa, Bäsk) reunite, bringing rock and jazz stylings to the tradition.

Harv

(Sweden)
With the long-standing folk fiddle duet tradition as their starting point, Harv bring energy, attitude, and new ideas to the mix.

All workshops for 2007 will take place at: University of Minnesota School of Music Ferguson Hall, Room 105, 2106 Fourth Street South Minneapolis, MN 55455

Workshop space is limited. Sign up in advance by emailing Workshop Coordinator Linda Thiel or call 612/338-2674 extension 2. If you have not signed up for a session in advance, you may be admitted at the door only if space is available. The workshop fee is $25 per session for participants with instruments, and $10 for silent auditors.
